Working with the moon phases in witchcraft is like having a calendar written in the sky. Each phase carries its own energy, from fresh starts at the new moon to full power at the full moon and release as the moon wanes. When you match your spells to the right phase, you’re working with that natural rhythm instead of against it.

How the moon cycle works
The moon takes about 29.5 days to go from one new moon to the next. As it orbits Earth, we see more or less of its sunlit side. When the lit part is growing, the moon is waxing. When it’s shrinking, the moon is waning.
The simplest way to remember it: the waxing moon is for drawing things in, and the waning moon is for sending things away. Spells for money, love, growth and confidence fit the waxing half, while spells for banishing, breaking habits, cutting ties and cleansing fit the waning half.
The 8 moon phases in witchcraft and what to do in each

Try: carry a bay leaf with your wish written on it.

Try: light a red or orange candle before a hard task.

Waxing gibbous
Energy: refinement, patience, building.

Try: a cord cutting ritual for a tie that drains you.

Waning crescent

Best for: cleansing, rest, reflection, banishing.
Try: a salt bath or a home cleansing.

Dark moon
Many witches call the last day or so of the cycle, when the moon is invisible, the dark moon. Its energy is deep and inward, used for shadow work (exploring hidden feelings and patterns), rest and strong banishing. Some witches treat it as part of the new moon instead.
If you miss the right phase, don’t wait a whole month. Reword your spell to fit the current one: “I attract calm” in the waxing moon becomes “I release stress” in the waning moon.
How to tell the moon phase by looking at the sky
In the Northern Hemisphere, there’s an easy trick. If the lit side of the moon is on the right, it’s waxing (growing). If the lit side is on the left, it’s waning. Some people remember it with “DOC”: a moon shaped like a D is waxing, an O is full, and a C is waning.
In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the other way around, so the lit side on the left means waxing. Near the equator, the crescent can look like it’s lying on its side. For exact times, a moon calendar like timeanddate.com is the most reliable.
Special moons worth knowing
A few moon events come up again and again in witchcraft. Here are the ones beginners hear about most:
- Supermoon: a full moon when the moon is closest to Earth, looking slightly larger and brighter. Often seen as a stronger full moon.
- Blue moon: usually the second full moon in one calendar month. Linked to rare chances and wishes.
- Black moon: usually the second new moon in one month, an extra-powerful time for new beginnings.
- Lunar eclipse: when Earth’s shadow falls on the full moon, sometimes turning it red (a “blood moon”). Used for deep transformation, though some witches avoid spells during eclipses.
- Named full moons: each month’s full moon has traditional names, like the Wolf Moon in January or the Cold Moon in December.
The moon also passes through a zodiac sign every two to three days, which adds another layer. A full moon in Cancer feels emotional and homey, while one in Aries feels bold and fiery. The Witch’s Cheat Sheet shows you the current phase and moon sign every day, with what each means, so you never have to work it out on your own.
