Easy Protection Spell for Beginners (Salt and Rosemary)
Feeling uneasy at home or around certain people? This simple salt and rosemary protection spell guards your space and your energy.

A protection spell is often the first spell a new witch casts, and for good reason: feeling safe in your home and in your own energy makes everything else easier. This easy protection spell uses two of the most trusted ingredients in witchcraft, salt and rosemary, and you probably have both in your kitchen right now. It protects your doorway and gives you a small charm to carry with you.

What does a protection spell do?
A protection spell creates an energetic boundary around you, your home or someone you love. It’s meant to keep out negative energy, ill intentions and draining influences, a bit like a shield or a locked door for your energy. Many witches cast one after moving, after an argument, when they feel watched or envied, or simply as a regular habit.
Protection magick works best alongside practical care. A spell for your home works with a locked door, and a spell for your energy works with healthy boundaries. If you’re ever in real danger, please contact the people and services who can help you in person; a spell is support, not a replacement.
Why salt and rosemary work for protection
Salt has been used for protection and purification across many cultures for thousands of years. It’s believed to absorb negative energy and create a barrier that unwanted energy can’t cross, which is why witches draw salt lines across doorways and salt circles around spells.
Rosemary is one of the most protective herbs in European folk magick. It was traditionally hung by doors and windows to keep away harm and thieves, and it also clears the mind. Together, salt protects and rosemary cleanses, so the spell both clears your space and seals it. Our guide to rosemary in witchcraft explains more of its uses.
Easy protection spell for your home and yourself
Cast this spell during a waning moon to push negativity away, or during a waxing moon to build your protection up. If you need it now, cast it now.
You’ll need
- Coarse salt, sea salt or table salt, to absorb and block negative energy
- Fresh or dried rosemary, for cleansing and protection
- A small jar or pouch, for your carry charm
- A black or white candle, black to absorb negativity or white for pure protection
- A fireproof dish, for the candle
What to do
- Cleanse first. Open a window and tidy your entrance. If you like, do a quick home cleansing before you begin.
- Light the candle. Place it near your front door, on a safe surface, and take three slow breaths.
- Charge the salt and rosemary. Hold them in your hands and say, “Salt and rosemary, guard this home and all within. Only love may enter here.”
- Seal the doorway. Sprinkle a thin line of salt across the threshold, inside your door, and lay a sprig of rosemary on top or tuck it above the door frame.
- Make your carry charm. Put a pinch of salt and a small piece of rosemary into the jar or pouch, close it and repeat the chant once more.
- Visualize your shield. Close your eyes and imagine a bright light around your home and around your own body, solid and calm.
- Close the spell. Snuff the candle, keep the charm in your bag or pocket, and leave the salt line overnight. Sweep it up in the morning and throw it away outside.
Sweep the old salt out of your front door, away from the house. Don’t pour it on your garden or lawn, because salt damages soil and plants.
Two quick protection spell variations
Protection for when you leave the house
Before you leave, touch your carry charm and say, “I walk protected, and nothing harmful sticks to me.” Picture a mirror-like shield around you that reflects negativity back where it came from. This takes ten seconds and works well before a stressful meeting or a crowded place.
Protection with a bay leaf
Write “protect” or your own protection sigil on a dry bay leaf, and place it inside your wallet, under your doormat or in your car. Bay is a traditional protective plant. Keep bay leaves out of reach of cats and dogs, since the ASPCA lists bay laurel as toxic to them. For more options, see our list of herbs for protection.
When to renew your protection spell
Protection fades with time, much like a candle burns down, so most witches renew it regularly. A good rhythm is once a month at the new or full moon, and always after a big event: a move, a breakup, an illness or a conflict at home.
Replace your carry charm when it feels heavy, gets damaged, or every few months. Throw the old salt and herbs away outside your home, and thank them for their work.
